What Are Mushroom Plate Cultures?

A plate culture is a 100mm agar petri dish pre-colonized with live, actively-growing mushroom mycelium of a selected species โ€” ready to use immediately.

โ™ป

Live & Ready

Each plate contains vigorous mycelium fully grown out on nutrient agar. Unlike spores or DIY agar work, plate cultures skip germination entirely โ€” transfer directly to grain, liquid culture, or more plates.

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Selected Genetics

Our plate cultures come from lab-selected, vigorous isolate strains. You are getting proven genetics, not a random multi-spore mix โ€” expect consistent colonization rates and reliable fruiting.

๐Ÿ•

Expand Endlessly

One plate culture can be expanded into dozens of new plates, multiple liquid culture jars, or several pounds of grain spawn. A single $26 plate becomes the foundation for an entire grow library.

Plate Culture vs Liquid Culture vs Spores

Plate cultures give you the strongest, most vigorous genetics and the most flexibility for expansion.

How to Use a Plate Culture

One plate becomes the foundation for your entire grow. Here are the main expansion paths.

Multiply Plates

Cut a small wedge of mycelium with a sterile scalpel or agar punch, transfer to a fresh agar plate. One plate becomes 8โ€“12.

Liquid Culture

Transfer a wedge into sterile nutrient broth using our liquid culture kit. Agitate and incubate until the broth is full of healthy mycelium.

Grain Spawn

Transfer wedges directly into sterilized grain bags or jars. One plate colonizes 2โ€“4 standard spawn bags. Spawn then expands into bulk substrate.

Fruit

Once grain spawn is fully colonized, mix into bulk substrate or pasteurized media. Fruit in a chamber with humidity and fresh air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about mushroom plate cultures.

A mushroom plate culture is a 100mm agar petri dish that has been pre-colonized with live, actively-growing mushroom mycelium of a specific species. You can see the mycelium clearly on the plate before using it, which lets you verify genetics and contamination before transferring. Plate cultures are the preferred starting point for serious cultivators building a culture library.
Both contain live mycelium, but a plate culture grows on solid agar media in a petri dish while a liquid culture grows in sterile nutrient broth inside a syringe. Plate cultures let you visually inspect for contamination and produce stronger, more vigorous genetics. Liquid cultures are faster for direct injection into substrate. Most cultivators use plates to maintain their genetic library and liquid culture for bulk inoculation.
Work in front of a laminar flow hood or inside a still air box. Sanitize your scalpel or agar punch with isopropyl alcohol. Cut a small wedge of clean, white mycelium (avoid the edges). Drop the wedge directly into a sterilized grain bag through the injection port, or into a liquid culture broth jar. One plate can typically inoculate 2โ€“4 grain bags or multiple liquid culture jars.
One plate culture can typically be expanded into 8โ€“12 new plates through wedge transfers. This is how cultivators build and maintain a genetic library โ€” one $26 plate becomes the foundation for dozens of plates over multiple generations. For best results, transfer from young, actively-growing mycelium rather than older plates.
Refrigerate the plate culture upon receipt. Mycelium goes dormant at refrigerator temperatures, extending shelf life for weeks. Use as soon as possible for the healthiest, most vigorous mycelium. Do not freeze โ€” this will crack the agar and kill the culture.
A laminar flow hood is highly recommended for plate work because agar is an open medium that is very susceptible to airborne contamination. A still air box (SAB) can work for careful beginners, but a flow hood dramatically improves your success rate. For transfers into sealed substrates like grain bags with injection ports, a still air box is often sufficient.
Our plate culture library includes six oyster varieties (King, Golden, Snow White, Pink, Sky Blue, King Blue), gourmet specialties (Lion's Mane, Chestnut, King Trumpet, Golden Enoki, Princess Pearl), and medicinal species (Reishi, Turkey Tail, Cordyceps Militaris). We continually add new species โ€” browse the full collection for current availability.
Spore syringes contain dormant, genetically-mixed spores that can take weeks to germinate and produce inconsistent results. A plate culture contains live, vigorous mycelium from a lab-selected isolate โ€” proven genetics, faster colonization, and uniform fruiting behavior. Plate cultures also let you verify contamination visually before using them, which spore syringes cannot.
