55-Gallon Basic Barrel Steamer — Manual On/Off
The entry-level way into barrel steaming: the same heavy-duty 55-gallon barrel and float-valve auto-fill as our PID units, run by a simple on/off switch. The lowest-cost option — you monitor the cycle and switch it off yourself. Built to order with a 2–4 week lead time and delivered by freight.

Barebones, Hands-On, Lowest Cost In
This is the entry-level barrel steamer: the same heavy-duty 55-gallon barrel, float valve, and false bottom as our PID units, driven by a simple on/off switch. It's the lowest-cost way to steam bulk substrate — as long as you're happy to run it by hand.
Simple On/Off Switch
One switch: flip it on and the element heats the barrel to steam temperature; flip it off when your cycle is done. Nothing to program — but also no timer and no automatic shut-off, so you monitor the run and decide when it's finished.
Float Valve Auto-Fill
A stainless float valve maintains the water level in the base automatically, so the barrel can't boil dry during a long unattended run. Connect a hose and the steamer manages its own water.
False Bottom & Spacer Grid
A 12-gauge perforated steel false bottom plus a spacer grid keeps your substrate bags up out of the water and in the steam, so heat penetrates evenly to the core of every block in the load.
Manual operation — you run the show
This is the hands-on barrel steamer. There's a single ON/OFF switch — no PID controller, no set-point, no countdown timer, and no automatic shut-off. You start it, keep an eye on your temperature, and switch it off when the cycle is done. Plan to attend the unit for the entire run.
Everything else is still built in: the float valve keeps the water topped up automatically, and the perforated false bottom holds your substrate up in the steam. If you'd rather set a temperature and walk away, that's exactly what the PID models add — see the comparison below.

110V or 220V? It Comes Down to Watts
Both versions steam a full load; the difference is how fast they heat. The 110V runs on a standard outlet with a 1,500-watt element. The 220V uses a much larger 5,500-watt element that heats noticeably faster and holds temperature more easily.
110V Element
The 1,500W element runs on a standard 110V outlet. Insulation matters here — bare, it fights heat loss and struggles to hold higher temperatures, so plan to wrap the barrel. You monitor the run the whole time.
220V Element
The 5,500W element heats noticeably faster than the 110V and holds temperature more easily. Add $300 over the 110V price.
However you power it, this is a manually operated unit — keep an eye on it during the run and switch it off when your cycle is complete.
Carbon Steel or Stainless — Your Call
Pick your barrel in the Barrel option at the top of the page. Carbon steel is the lowest-cost route (it needs a food-safe coating to prevent rust); stainless never rusts and never needs coating.
Carbon – Unpainted
Ships as raw carbon steel. You seal and coat the interior yourself with a high-temperature, food-safe coating before first use. The lowest-cost way in.
Carbon – Epoxy-Lined
These barrels come factory-lined with a durable food-safe epoxy coating, so there's nothing for you to paint or prep — ready to run out of the crate, still on a carbon steel barrel.
Stainless Steel
Never rusts, never needs any coating — the set-it-once, forget-about-longevity choice. Select Stainless Steel in the Barrel option above.
Manual Now, or Set-and-Walk-Away?
This Basic unit is the lowest-cost way into barrel steaming. If you'd rather not stand over it, the PID models add automatic temperature control, a countdown timer, and hands-free shut-off for a modest step up.

Plan your throughput
Estimate how much substrate this barrel can pasteurize — bags per load, per day, per week, and per month. Adjust the heater, ambient temperature, pasteurization level, bag size, and how many loads you run per day.
Made to Order, Delivered by Freight
Lead Time & Freight Delivery
Every barrel steamer is built to order in the USA, with a typical lead time of 2 to 4 weeks before it ships. This is a large, heavy unit that ships by freight truck — freight is arranged at the time of shipping and billed separately, so the price you see here is for the steamer itself.
These are ballpark figures to help you plan — actual freight depends on your exact destination, address type, and current carrier rates. We'll arrange the freight and confirm the real cost with you before it ships. Want a quote before ordering? Call us at (530) 300-9292 with your ZIP code and address type.
Is this a sterilizer or a pasteurizer?
This is an atmospheric steam pasteurizer — sometimes called a substrate sterilizer or barrel steamer. It heats your load with steam at ambient pressure, which is exactly what you want for bulk substrate: straw, masters mix, supplemented sawdust, and CVG. It super-pasteurizes those materials so beneficial competition is knocked back and your spawn can take over.
It is not a pressure sterilizer. Grain spawn and agar need true sterilization at 15 PSI / 250°F in an autoclave or pressure canner — a barrel steamer isn't intended for those. Use this for bulk substrate, and use a pressure sterilizer for grain and agar.
